Welcome back VirtualBox! Problems and Solutions

>> 21 December 2018

No Toolbar, no Status bar
Returning to Virtual Box after leaving it for some time (not because i dislike it. But i was busy). And I have got a real big unpleasant surprise !

Virtual Box version
Installed from rpmfusion

Fedora 29

What no toolbar?

Like it the hard way!
One way to remedy this problem was to go to user folder/.config and remove VirtualBox folder and to be more sure des-install and re-install pkgs. You like head ache aren't you. In Addition you'll lose all the last VM's ?

A better way

A better way is to edit the file "/home/user/.config/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml" You'll find two elements one for Toolbar and another Status bar toggle both from false to true (if you have something else missing, try here). When you start Virtual Box, elements are there

3rd easy way
Right click on Menu bar and check either Toolbar or Statusbar or both

 Another big problem
Changes in this virtualbox.xml are not persistent
When you close VirtualBox and re-open it Toolbar and Status bar are vanished!
virtualbox.xml header mention this

** If you make changes to this file while any VirtualBox related application
** is running, your changes will be overwritten later, without taking effect.
** Use VBoxManage or the VirtualBox Manager GUI to make changes.

More solutions?

Not yet. But if you close VirtualBox in Fedora 29 using "x" button. The next time you'll get no Toolbar the same is true for Statusbar. But if you close it using File,Exit (menu), and restart bars are there!

Known bug

This bug is already known for VirtualBox community, we hope for a fix soon

Host-only has changed its place

Normally We can use host-only adapter for internal networking on adapter 2

while 1st adapter is connected to Nat or Nat Networking

To create Nat Networking File > Preferences > Networking > Nat tab > Add > Nat Networking

No need was in the past for Host-Only creation

Now for the 2nd Adapter, when you select Host-only the name cannot be selected and there's an error message at the bottom

But first must have Toolbar visible

At the top right corner > Global Tools

" This tool is moved in 5.2.0. Look on the main UI toolbar, specifically the "Global Tools" split button on the right. "

There are

2 options in Global Tools

Click on Host Network Manager

As soon as clicking on Host Network Manager

A new Window is opened with " Host Network Manager "

A click on Create will create the Host-Only interface

After a click on create the Host-only adapter is created, you can even enable it from here

A click on " Machine Tools " return to VM details

Now Host-only is in VM networking

With its name vboxnet0

Hope you find it helpful
